The Bing verse in the Di Tian Sui (滴天髓)
Verse traditionally attributed to Jingtu (京圖), with the annotation attributed to Liu Ji (劉基, Ming dynasty); quoted from Chinese Wikisource. The translation is ours.
丙火猛烈,欺霜侮雪,能煆庚金,逄辛反怯,土眾成慈,水猖顯節,虎馬犬鄉,甲來焚滅。
Bing fire is fierce; it defies frost and scorns snow. It can forge Geng metal, yet meeting Xin it turns timid. Among much earth it becomes kind; where water rages it shows its integrity. In the land of Tiger, Horse and Dog, if Jia comes, it burns itself out.
The verse uses human words (kind, loyal, filial) for how the stems act on one another in a chart; it does not describe people.
What the annotation says
The annotation calls Bing pure yang, unafraid of autumn frost or winter snow. It can forge hard Geng metal, but combining with soft Xin weakens it. Earth is its child, so among much Wu or Ji it shows kindness; water is its lord, so facing strong Ren or Gui it shows loyalty. If 寅午戌 already form fire and Jia shows as well, it grows too dry and burns out.
The annotation opens with 「丙為焚烈之火」 (blazing, burning fire). Summarized in our words from the annotation on the same 天干論 page on Wikisource.
Fire in the Huainanzi (淮南子)
The Huainanzi, 天文訓 chapter, lists each direction with its element, season, planet and animal, and ends with the two stems of its days.
南方,火也……執衡而治夏。其神為熒惑,其獸朱鳥,其音徵,其日丙丁。
Direction: South · Season: Summer · Planet: Mars (熒惑) · Animal: Vermilion Bird (朱鳥) · Note: zhi (徵)
