About Fengshui Zen
Fengshui Zen is a reference for the Chinese calendar: Chinese New Year dates, zodiac years with their exact start and end, lunar months and leap months, festivals and the 24 solar terms. Many zodiac pages give only the Gregorian year; here every year starts on its real date, so you can tell which animal a January or February birthday belongs to.
The site describes the traditional calendar system. It does not publish horoscopes, personality readings, lucky days or predictions, and despite its name it does not offer feng shui consultations or readings: the name reflects the traditional Chinese calendar that feng shui practice also relies on.
How the dates are calculated
The full method and every disagreement with the Observatory: How we check every date.
- New moons and solar terms are computed with astronomical algorithms (the open-source lunar-javascript library) in China Standard Time (UTC+8), the reference time of the Chinese calendar.
- Every day from 1901 to 2100 that appears in the Hong Kong Observatory, Gregorian-Lunar Calendar Conversion Table was compared with our calculation: 73,048 days, 2,474 lunar month starts and the dates of 4,800 solar terms. (The Observatory's 2069 table has no row for December 30, so that one day could not be compared.) 1900 is calculated only, because the Observatory tables begin in 1901.
- Solar-term times to the minute are our calculation; the Observatory tables give dates only.
- They agree except in 7 cases where a new moon or solar term falls within minutes of midnight (one lunar month start in 2057 and six solar terms between 1912 and 1979). The Observatory notes that such cases can differ by a day; we follow the Observatory's date.
Corrections
If a date looks wrong, email fourtuneinsight@gmail.com with the page address. We check it against the Observatory tables and correct it.
