Feng shui calendar: flying stars and Kua numbers

Last checked · calculated from the checked solar-term dates (Hong Kong Observatory tables)

Two parts of feng shui are pure calendar calculation: the flying star charts for each year and month, and the Kua number of the Eight Mansions system. Both run on the solar year that starts at Lichun and on solar months that start at the jie solar terms, which this site already times to the minute. The pages here show what each system assigns; they do not give remedies or advice.

How the flying star charts are calculated

The annual centre star falls by one each solar year: 3 in 2024, 2 in 2025, 1 in 2026, then 9 in 2027. The other eight numbers follow the Luoshu path from the centre, one higher at each step: centre, Northwest, West, Northeast, South, North, Southwest, East, Southeast.

Each solar month starts at one of the 12 jie solar terms, not on the 1st of the month. The first month of the solar year (the Tiger month, from Lichun) has 8, 5 or 2 in the centre, depending on the year's Earthly Branch, and each later month is one lower. The charts on this site put South at the top, as Chinese charts do.

The year positions follow from the year's Earthly Branch: the Tai Sui sits at the branch's own mountain, the Sui Po opposite it, and the Three Killings in the sector opposite the direction of the branch's three-harmony group.

Kua number

The Kua number calculator uses your birth date, time, place and sex. Many calculators use the calendar year, which gives a different number for anyone born in January or before Lichun in early February.

FAQ

Why does the feng shui year start in February?

Flying stars and the Kua number use the solar year of the Chinese calendar, which starts at Lichun, the Start of Spring, on February 3, 4 or 5. The lunar Chinese New Year is a different start and is not used for these charts.

What is Period 9?

Flying star feng shui divides time into nine 20-year periods. Period 9 covers 2024 to 2043: it began at Lichun 2024 (February 4, 2024) and runs until Lichun 2044.

Does this site give feng shui advice?

No. It shows the charts and numbers that the traditional systems assign, calculated from checked calendar dates. Remedies and interpretations vary between schools and are not covered.

Solar-term dates are checked against the Hong Kong Observatory, Gregorian-Lunar Calendar Conversion Table; times are calculated. Feng shui is a traditional practice; these pages describe its calendar systems and are not advice or predictions.
